Dante’s Divine Comedy (or Divina Commedia) is considered not only the most important poem of the Middle Ages but also the greatest work of Italian literature of all time. High praise indeed, but given the enduring impact of this 14th-century narrative poem on art and culture, it is hard to deny it that honor.
Dante Alighieri (1265–1321) composed this epic work over a 12-year period, finally completing it in 1320. Originally titled Comedìa ("comedy," in contrast to "tragedy," the other common narrative theme of the time) by the author, the "Divina" was added by Giovanni Boccaccio in the 1500s. Dante divided the work into three sections—Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso—and it is the first canto of the Inferno that we have reproduced for this cover. While Dante's own original manuscripts have not survived to the present day, this is from a 14th-century manuscript copy, one of the earliest produced.
The Divine Comedy was instrumental in establishing Italian literature, and Dante's portrayals of Hell (Inferno), Purgatory, and Heaven continue to inspire writers and artists today as part of the soul's journey to God. His creative vision of the afterlife is an emblem of the medieval worldview, and although written as a religious poem, it has inspired writers and artists of all backgrounds in the centuries since. Because Dante wrote this in the common Tuscan dialect rather than the high art language of Latin, his poem became more accessible to readers and helped establish Tuscan as the standardized Italian language.
John Milton, Geoffrey Chaucer and Alfred Lord Tennyson all considered themselves fans of the work, and so do we! We are thrilled to add this beautifully illuminated manuscript copy of Dante’s Divine Comedy to the Paperblanks collection.

Paperblanks is a Canadian manufacturer that produces quality notebooks that are not only attractive but also extremely well-structured and bound using traditional techniques; the bindings are not glued (a binding technique that is economical for the manufacturer but eventually leads to page loss) but are instead all sewn.
All Paperblanks notebooks are bound using two methods. They are either hand-sewn using 'Coptic' binding, which originated in 4th-century Egypt, or Smythe sewn, which is the most durable binding technique and allows the notebook to open flat without page loss.
All Paperblanks notebooks use fine, laid writing paper that is acid-free, archival quality, and high opacity. Their notebooks also feature a ribbon marker and an inner pocket inside the back cover to store your notes.
