  • Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) was not only the greatest poet, novelist, and playwright of German literature, but also a distinguished natural philosopher. His keen powers of observation allowed him to capture the multifaceted complexity of human behavior in his writing.

In masterpieces like The Sorrows of Young Werther, he created the prototype of the Romantic hero, and in Faust, arguably Germany’s greatest contribution to world literature, he painted a heartbreaking portrait of a man’s pact with the devil. A tragic play in two parts, Faust revisits the ancient legend of Doctor Faustus, a scholar who sells his soul to the devil. Goethe turned this story into a profound exploration of human nature, morality, and destiny. This classic of European literature occupied Goethe for much of his life, from his youth until just before his death. Despite being based on a medieval myth, the work draws parallels with contemporary society and humanity's search for meaning in the world. The legacy of Goethe’s immense body of work and his expression of new ideas continue to resonate even today.

Featured here is a handwritten dialogue between Faust and Mephistopheles from Goethe's Faust II manuscript, while the back cover features an engraving of the two characters by German illustrator and cartoonist Julius Nisle. Goethe is no stranger to our Embellished Manuscripts Collection and has appeared in three separate publications: an excerpt from the travel journal he kept during his two-year journey to Italy, a letter written to him by his friend Friedrich von Schiller, and a reproduction of the musical setting of Goethe's poem Erlkönig by Franz Schubert. As one of the most active and talented minds of the 19th century, we are pleased to welcome Goethe back to our Paperblanks collection.

  • Paperblanks is a Canadian manufacturer that produces quality journals that are not only attractive but also extremely well-constructed, bound using traditional techniques; the bindings are not glued (a technique that is economical for the manufacturer but eventually leads to page loss), but instead, all are sewn.

All Paperblanks journals are bound using one of two methods. They are either hand-sewn using the 'Coptic' binding that originated in 4th-century Egypt, or they are Smyth-sewn, the most durable binding technique, which allows the journal to lay flat without page loss.

All Paperblanks journals use acid-free, archival-quality, and high-opacity fine laid writing paper. Their journals also include a ribbon page marker and an inner pocket inside the back cover to store your notes.
