Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749–1832), in addition to being the greatest poet, novelist and playwright of German literature, was also an eminent natural philosopher. His keen powers of observation allowed him to capture the multifaceted complexity of human behavior in his writing.
In his masterpieces such as The Sorrows of Young Werther, he created the prototype of the Romantic hero, and in Faust, perhaps Germany’s greatest contribution to world literature, he drew a heartbreaking portrait of a man’s pact with the devil. A tragic play in two parts, Faust reimagines the ancient legend of Doctor Faustus, a magician who sells his soul to the devil. Goethe turned this story into a profound exploration of human nature, morality and fate. This classic of European literature occupied Goethe for much of his life, from his youth until shortly before his death. Despite being based on a medieval myth, the work draws parallels to modern society and humanity’s search for meaning in the world. The legacy of Goethe’s immense life’s work and his articulation of new ideas continue to resonate even today.
Featured here is a handwritten dialogue between Faust and Mephistopheles from Goethe’s Faust II manuscript, and on the back cover is an engraving of the two characters by German illustrator and draftsman Julius Nisle. Goethe is no stranger to our Embellished Manuscripts Collection, having been featured in three separate publications: an excerpt from the travel journal he kept during his two-year Italian journey, a letter written to him by his friend Friedrich von Schiller, and a reproduction of the musical setting of Goethe’s poem Erlkönig by Franz Schubert. We are delighted to welcome Goethe, one of the most active and talented minds of the 19th century, back to our Paperblanks collection.

Paperblanks is a Canadian manufacturer that produces quality notebooks that are not only attractive but also extremely well-structured and bound using traditional techniques; the bindings are not glued (a binding technique that is economical for the manufacturer but eventually leads to page loss) but are instead all sewn.
All Paperblanks notebooks are bound using one of two methods. They are either hand-sewn using 'Coptic' binding, which originated in 4th-century Egypt, or Smythe-sewn, the most durable binding technique, which allows the notebook to open flat without losing pages.
All Paperblanks notebooks use acid-free, archival-quality, high-opacity, fine-laid writing paper. Their notebooks also feature a ribbon page marker and an interior pocket inside the back cover to store your notes.
