  • George Orwell (1903-1950) is the pen name of Eric Arthur Blair, an English novelist, essayist, journalist, and literary critic remembered as much for his clear prose as for his passionate commitment to democratic socialism. In much of his writing, he drew on his experiences serving in the Indian Imperial Police in Burma, acutely aware that the injustices he witnessed, along with a sense of adventure, shaped his work.

His fierce opposition to totalitarianism is perhaps felt most strongly in his 1949 novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. This dystopian social science fiction work introduced terms like "Big Brother" and "thoughtcrime" into our social lexicon and remains one of the most widely read novels in the English language. In recent years, the novel has regained public interest, climbing to the top of bestseller lists due to its unsettling relevance in today's socio-political climate.

Orwell was not a great preserver of his manuscripts; in fact, he famously instructed his literary executor to burn any drafts left behind upon his death. Of all his writings, only one manuscript portion of Nineteen Eighty-Four has survived. It contains four separate composition stages written between 1946 and 1948 and accounts for nearly half of the final published work.

The surviving manuscript of Nineteen Eighty-Four is located at the John Hay Library at Brown University. It was donated to a charity auction in 1952 by the author’s widow, Sonia Orwell, and purchased by Scribner's in New York. The manuscript was eventually purchased by Daniel Siegel, who, with the help of renowned Orwell scholar Peter Davidson, published a facsimile edition in 1984, before presenting the manuscript to the Library in 1992. Remaining copies of the 1984 limited edition Manuscript Facsimile, published by Siegel's M & S Press, can be purchased through M & S Press or Amazon.

  • Paperblanks is a Canadian manufacturer that produces quality notebooks that are not only attractive but also extremely well-structured, bound using traditional techniques; the bindings are not glued (a binding technique that is economical for the manufacturer but eventually leads to page loss) but are instead all sewn.

All Paperblanks notebooks are bound using two methods. They are either hand-sewn using 'Coptic' binding, which dates back to 4th-century Egypt, or Smyth sewn, the most durable binding technique, which allows the notebook to open flat without any page loss.

All Paperblanks notebooks use acid-free, archival-quality, high-opacity, fine-laid writing paper. Their notebooks also feature a ribbon marker and an inner pocket inside the back cover to store your notes.
