  • Experience an important piece of Shakespearean history with our Shakespeare Library series.

This magnificent gold-tooled design comes from a binding attributed to Christian Samuel Kalthoeber, a German bookbinder working in London. He designed a beautiful new cover for this copy of Shakespeare's First Folio around 1800.

First published in London in 1623, Mr. William Shakespeare’s Comedies, Histories & Tragedies, known as the First Folio, is a frozen-in-time account of his plays, complete with typesetting errors and misspellings. A major publishing undertaking, the book was proofread and corrected while it was being printed, so different versions of the book contain different errors and corrections. Prepared by his colleagues John Heminges and Henry Condell seven years after his death, the book contains 36 of Shakespeare's plays printed in folio format.

Today, the First Folio is considered one of the most influential books ever published. It is recognized as the only reliable text for 18 of Shakespeare's plays that had never been printed before, including Macbeth, The Tempest and Twelfth Night. Of the original print run of approximately 750 copies, only 235 copies are known to have survived to the present day. Because of its influence and scarcity, the First Folio is one of the most valuable printed books in the world, with one selling at auction for nearly $10 million in 2020.

The Folger Shakespeare Library holds 82 copies of the First Folio in its collections, more than one-third of all remaining volumes. In 2016, to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death, they toured select copies to all 50 American states as part of their ongoing focus on helping people "experience Shakespeare and his world in surprising new ways." Located just outside Washington, DC, the Folger is an international center for Shakespeare scholarship and regularly hosts workshops, theatrical performances, and family programs. We are honored to introduce this beautiful and unique First Folio binding, our first reproduction from this incomparable Shakespeare collection.

  • Paperblanks is a Canadian manufacturer that produces quality journals that are not only attractive but also extremely well-structured and bound using traditional techniques; the bindings are not glued (a binding technique that is economical for the manufacturer but eventually leads to page loss) but are instead all sewn.

All Paperblanks journals are bound using one of two methods. They are either hand-sewn using 'Coptic' binding, which dates back to 4th-century Egypt, or Smyth sewn, the most durable binding technique, which allows the journal to open flat without page loss.

All Paperblanks journals use acid-free, archival-quality, high-opacity fine laid writing paper. Their journals also include a ribbon bookmark and an inner pocket on the inside back cover to store your notes.
