  • To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the great lion of French literature, Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870), we are honored to release this Special Edition series featuring the handwritten draft of The Count of Monte Cristo.

A novelist and playwright, Dumas was an important figure in the Romantic movement. He was known for his historical novels of high adventure, with The Count of Monte Cristo (1844-1845) and The Three Musketeers (1844) being two of his most famous works. By the end of his career, Dumas had published over one hundred thousand pages.

As one of the most widely read French authors in the world, Dumas was unique in his craft, touching upon various mediums. He began his career as a playwright and in 1846 founded the Théâtre Historique in Paris, where many of his works were staged. Dumas later moved on to magazine articles and travel books, and in 1861 he founded and published the newspaper L'Indipendente, which supported the efforts of Italian unification.

Along with a luxurious lifestyle, Dumas traveled frequently, spending time in Belgium, Russia, and Italy before returning to France in 1864. The Count of Monte Cristo takes place between 1815 and 1839 in France, Italy, and the Mediterranean islands – the period of the reign of Louis-Philippe and the time before Napoleon returned to power after his exile. This historical background is a fundamental element of the adventure story, as this tale deals primarily with themes of hope, justice, vengeance, mercy, and forgiveness. Today, the work is considered a literary classic.

With the handwritten draft of this French classic on the front cover and a drawing of the prison where the Count was held on the back cover, we hope this Special Edition design inspires you to leave a mark and write your own story of adventure and hope.

  • Paperblanks is a Canadian manufacturer that produces quality journals that are not only attractive but also extremely well-structured and bound using traditional techniques; the bindings are not glued (a binding technique that is economical for the manufacturer but eventually leads to page loss) but are instead all sewn.

All Paperblanks journals are bound using two methods. They are either hand-sewn using 'Coptic' binding, which dates back to 4th-century Egypt, or Smythe-sewn, the most durable binding technique, which allows the journal to open flat without page loss.

All Paperblanks journals use acid-free, archival-quality, high-opacity, finely laid writing paper. Their journals also feature a ribbon page marker and an inner pocket inside the back cover for storing your notes.
