This design pays tribute to an 18th-century binding that housed the groundbreaking work Khamsa by the Persian poet Nizami Ganjavi (c. 1141–1209). Featuring intricate floral details, our Layla cover design beautifully reflects the contents of the original binding.
Regarded as the greatest romantic epic poet in Persian literature and described as the "creator of poetic scenes," Nizami brought a colloquial and otherworldly quality to the Persian epic. His best-known work, the Khamsa (also known as the Five Treasures in English), is a series of five long narrative poems. The first of these, Makhzan-ol-Asrār, was influenced by Sanai Ghaznavi’s The Walled Garden of Truth, an early Sufi book of mystical poetry. The other four poems are medieval romances.
Nizami’s romantic tale of Layla and Majnun gave its name to the hit single "Layla" from Eric Clapton’s album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, which was heavily influenced by Nizami and his poems of unrequited love.
We first introduced our Persian Poetry series in the spring of 2024 with The Orchard, a cover reproducing a 17th-century binding of Bustan by the poet and prose writer Saadi (1210–1291). As the second title in the series, the elegantly adorned cover of this Layla journal reflects the beauty of the words found in the original 18th-century book.

Paperblanks is a Canadian manufacturer that produces high-quality journals that are not only attractive but also extremely well-structured and bound using traditional techniques; the bindings are not glued (a binding technique that is economical for the manufacturer but eventually leads to page loss) but are instead all sewn.
All Paperblanks journals are bound using one of two methods. They are either hand-sewn using the 'Coptic' binding method, which originated in 4th-century Egypt, or Smyth sewn, which is the most durable binding technique and allows the journal to lay flat without page loss.
All Paperblanks journals use acid-free, archival-quality, high-opacity, fine-laid writing paper. The journals also feature a ribbon marker and an interior pocket on the inside back cover to store your notes.
