  • Born into slavery in 1818, Frederick Douglass escaped his chains and rose in American society to become a renowned abolitionist, social reformer, statesman, orator, writer, diplomat, and public servant. Today, he is considered the father of the American Civil Rights movement.

After escaping slavery in Maryland, Douglass became famous for his poignant anti-slavery writings and speeches. His human rights work was dedicated to advancing the status not only of African Americans but of all marginalized groups. In his role as a public servant, he was an active supporter of the women's suffrage movement.

As a recognized national leader for African American civil rights, Frederick Douglass traveled and gave extensive speeches on the subject. When his health began to decline in the late 1800s, he continued to support the movement by mentoring other African American leaders, including Ida B. Wells. Wells was a well-known anti-lynching leader, investigative journalist, and educator, and she was also one of the founders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Wells had also been born into slavery, but was freed by the Emancipation Proclamation during the American Civil War.

  • Paperblanks is a Canadian manufacturer that produces quality notebooks that are not only attractive but also extremely well-structured, bound using traditional techniques; the bindings are not glued (a binding technique that, while economical for the manufacturer, eventually leads to page loss) but are instead all sewn.

All Paperblanks notebooks are bound using two methods. They are either hand-sewn using 'Coptic' binding, which dates back to 4th-century Egypt, or Smyth sewn, which is the most durable binding technique and allows the notebook to open flat without page loss.

All Paperblanks notebooks use acid-free, archival-quality, high-opacity laid writing paper. Their notebooks also feature a ribbon page marker and an inner pocket inside the back cover to store your notes.
