  • The art of still life painting is a celebrated part of Dutch culture and a technique most valued by its artists. However, this fascinating and timeless artistic style was not fully formed. Before these artists were so celebrated, there were illustrators who added emotional power to written work by delicately illuminating manuscripts written by hand with paintings of plants, fruits, flowers, animals, and insects.

One of the most famous practitioners of this style of illumination was Joris Hoefnagel (1542-1601). In the 1590s, Emperor Rudolf II ordered Hoefnagel to add his illuminations, intended to represent a study of the natural world, to the Mira calligraphiae monumenta. The book was a manuscript on the art of calligraphy written in the mid-16th century by Georg Bocskay, the imperial secretary to Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand I. While making his additions, Hoefnagel not only included the usual elements of flora and fauna, but also enriched Bocskay's writings with hybrid creatures and ornate masks from the letters created by the author. Using media such as watercolor, gold and silver paint, and ink on parchment, Hoefnagel aimed to show the superior emotional power of images rather than the simple written word.

The specific piece from the Mira that we have reproduced here is known as Wainscot, French Rose, Wasp-like Insect, English Daisy, and Caterpillar due to the most clearly depicted plants and insects. The scientific naturalism of Hoefnagel's botanical and animal drawings served as a model for future Dutch still life artists. Hoefnagel is remembered as the last major Flemish manuscript illuminator and one of the first artists to work on the new genre of still life. In fact, one of his undated miniature flower pieces is considered the first known independent still life painting.

The Mira calligraphiae monumenta (Model Book of Calligraphy) is celebrated as one of the last important examples of European manuscript illumination. As two masters in their field, Bocskay and Hoefnagel work, neither art form rises as superior. Instead, calligraphy and illumination exalt one another. The book can be found today in the collections of the Getty Museum in California.

  • Paperblanks is a Canadian manufacturer that produces quality notebooks that are not only attractive but also extremely well-structured, bound using traditional techniques; the bindings are not glued (a binding technique that is economical for the manufacturer but eventually leads to page loss) but are instead all sewn.

All Paperblanks notebooks are bound using one of two methods. They are either hand-sewn using 'Coptic' binding, which originated in 4th-century Egypt, or Smythe-sewn, which is the most durable binding technique and allows the notebook to open flat without losing pages.

All Paperblanks notebooks use acid-free, archival-quality, high-opacity, fine-laid writing paper. Their notebooks also feature a ribbon page marker and an inner pocket inside the back cover to store your notes.
