  • Spinola Hours Softcover Flexi Notebook
    Period: circa 1510-1520
    Region: Belgium

The luxury personal prayer book known as the Spinola Hours, which displays astonishing games of naturalistic illusionism on its pages, is one of the most visually sophisticated Flemish manuscripts of the 16th century.

A book of hours contains texts such as the calendar of Church feasts, the Hours of the Virgin (a cycle of prayers dedicated to the Virgin Mary), the Office of the Dead, and other prayers, hymns, and readings. This particular example enriches these contents with a special series of weekday services and rites, allowing for further possibilities for rich illuminations. The book was undoubtedly commissioned by a wealthy patron, perhaps Margaret of Austria, for whom the Master of James IV of Scotland—a famous manuscript illuminator and painter—produced other works. It belonged to the Spinola family in Genoa in the 1700s, from whom it takes its modern name.

We are honored to present this unique example of illumination from the J. Paul Getty Museum as part of our shared collection.

  • Paperblanks is a Canadian manufacturer that produces quality notebooks that are not only attractive but also extremely well-structured and bound using traditional techniques; the bindings are not glued (a binding technique that, while economical for the manufacturer, eventually leads to page loss) but are instead all sewn.

All Paperblanks notebooks are bound using two methods. They are either sewn by hand using 'Coptic' binding, which originated in 4th-century Egypt, or Smyth sewn, which is the most durable binding technique and allows the notebook to open flat without page loss.

All Paperblanks notebooks use acid-free, archival-quality, high-opacity, fine-laid writing paper. Their notebooks also feature a ribbon marker and an internal pocket inside the back cover to store your notes.
