  • The binding of the Lindau Gospels was designed to inspire awe while the book was carried in processions or displayed on an altar. The back cover in particular stands out as a masterpiece of bookmaking, and we are honored to reproduce it for our Lindau Gospels series. Crafted with gold, silver, and enamel and embellished with jewels, this ornate binding stands as a powerful manifestation of art as a vehicle for faith.

Produced in a German workshop near Salzburg between 750 and 800 AD, this gold and jeweled binding now stands proudly at the Morgan Library in New York, heralded as one of the collection’s most important acquisitions. J.P. Morgan purchased the illuminated manuscript in 1901, and it was this exquisitely designed book that set a new direction for many subsequent additions to his collections.

The Lindau binding is an archetypal representation of book publishing from the early to mid-9th century, where the overall effort focused more on ornamentation than content. During this period, the majority of the citizenry would not have known how to read, but they would have been drawn to the book cover as a metaphor for the knowledge within. This treatment was applied especially to religious works because the stories could be easily conveyed to followers without much explanation.

  • Paperblanks is a Canadian manufacturer that produces quality notebooks that are not only attractive but also extremely well-structured and bound using traditional techniques; the bindings are not glued (a binding technique that, while economical for the manufacturer, eventually leads to page loss) but are instead all sewn.

All Paperblanks notebooks are bound using two methods. They are either hand-sewn using 'Coptic' binding, which originated in 4th-century Egypt, or Smyth sewn, the most durable binding technique, which allows the notebook to open flat without page loss.

All Paperblanks notebooks use acid-free, archival-quality, high-opacity, finely laid writing paper. Their notebooks also include a ribbon page marker and an inner pocket inside the back cover to store your notes.
