  • All art is a chance to experience a mood, an emotion, a feeling. The art of Laurel Burch (1945-2007) has an especially uplifting, joyful, and nourishing quality. The designs in our colorful Laurel Burch Collection can make your imagination soar, from the world of Fantastic Felines to the celebration of the Spirit of Womanhood.

Born in Southern California, Laurel was diagnosed with a congenital bone disease that caused hundreds of bone fractures throughout her life. She grew up in the difficult conditions of a broken home and, as a teenager, chose to move away from that life and follow her own independent path. She eventually found her place in San Francisco and, as a single mother, looked for creative ways to support her family.

Although she had no formal training in art or jewelry making, Laurel began putting together interesting metal pieces she found in junkyards. She created whimsical jewelry and transformed her artistic style into what we see today. Her vibrant colors and joyful paintings became so popular that her works were licensed worldwide. Through art, she found her solace, her sanctuary, and a sense of spiritual renewal.

Laurel's paintings are full of creative visions, vibrant colors, and lively creatures. In 1971, when she went to China to begin mass production of her designed products, she discovered "cloisonné," a traditional technique of decorating metal surfaces with enamel. This became a signature feature of her artistic style.

Many of her paintings remind us of cloisonné enamels with their small, colorful compartments. In addition to showcasing Laurel's signature bold colors, this cover also touches on a theme close to Laurel's heart. Her hometown and femininity, which provide visual clues to the diverse cultures of sunny California, are well represented in this design.

Laurel started as a self-taught artist who connected with others by giving away the pieces she made. Later, she became a pioneering businesswoman at the head of a trading empire. And, as she always wished, the jewelry, fashion accessories, and home goods she decorated with her paintings continue to brighten people's lives.

  • Paperblanks is a Canadian manufacturer that produces quality notebooks that are not only attractive but also extremely well-structured and bound using traditional techniques; the bindings are not glued (a binding technique that is economical for the manufacturer but eventually leads to page loss) but are instead all sewn.

All Paperblanks notebooks are bound using two methods. They are either hand-sewn using 'Coptic' binding, which originated in 4th-century Egypt, or Smythe-sewn, the most durable binding technique, which allows the notebook to open flat without losing pages.

All Paperblanks notebooks use acid-free, archival-quality, and high-opacity fine laid writing paper. Their notebooks also include a ribbon page marker and an inner pocket inside the back cover to store your notes.
