  • The timeless beauty of an antique leather journal is brought into the present day on this intricately embellished, leather-like cover.

Since the late 16th century, fine Moroccan leather has been prized for use in luxury book bindings due to its strength and ability to be gilded. Our Pacific Blue cover is inspired by the ocean blue-green hue of our Tolstoy, Letter on Peace design and reflects its peaceful sentiments. With a delicate leaf pattern set against a golden background, this cover pays homage to the art of gold tooling, which was originally brought to Europe via burgeoning trade routes leading to the East.

When we first began making Paperblanks journals, we found a piece of William Shakespeare’s handwriting and knew it could make an inspiring journal cover. Soon after, we added designs featuring the writing of Ernest Hemingway and Jane Austen, creating what would become our Embellished Manuscripts Collection. These first covers were minimalist designs featuring literary manuscripts written in black ink on beige paper. Eventually, our creative impulses began to take hold and we experimented with the design by adding a gold frame.

Starting from a photo of a small, magnificent piece of gold filigree, our Art Director created a full frame for the Shakespeare manuscript and highlighted it with a burnt orange background. Of course, our curiosity about what could happen next didn't end there! By removing the manuscript, we immediately saw the possibilities for a design inspired by classic Renaissance leather bindings. And so, our foundational Old Leather Collection was born.

Today, we are free to play with frame shapes and background colors, and that initial beige and black design continues to form the backbone of two of our most enduringly popular collections.

  • Paperblanks is a Canadian manufacturer that produces quality journals that are not only attractive but also extremely well-structured, bound using traditional techniques; the bindings are not glued (a binding technique that is economical for the manufacturer but eventually leads to page loss) but are instead all sewn.

All Paperblanks journals are bound using two methods. They are either hand-sewn using 'Coptic' binding, which originated in 4th-century Egypt, or Smyth sewn, which is the most durable binding technique and allows the journal to open flat without page loss.

All Paperblanks journals use acid-free, archival-quality, high-opacity, fine laid writing paper. Their journals also feature a ribbon page marker and an inner pocket inside the back cover to store your notes.
