  • Paperblanks' tradition of reproducing antique book covers showcases our appreciation for the traditions of decorative bookbinding. In our Nova Stella series, we want to take you back to the second half of the 18th century and the distinctive style of adorning book covers.

The book whose cover is reproduced here is a 1768 publication of the Missale Sacri Ordinis Praedicatorum, a volume containing instructions and texts for priests to use during religious services throughout the year. It was published in Rome by Octavio Puccinelli, and some of his publications can still be found in major libraries around the world.

Certain elements of this design reveal their origins. One of the most important points where 18th-century bindings differ from their 17th-century counterparts is how the decorations filled the empty space of the surface. Instead of creating ornate patterns to fill every available corner, binders directed most of their efforts toward creating elegant frames. The middle section was often left blank, or as is the case here, placed a central object to complete the composition.

As you look closer at the shape in the center of the design, you will see it surrounding the "IHS" monogram, with a cross above it and a heart pierced by three nails just below. The monogram has been used for centuries, and over the years there have been many different interpretations of its meaning. However, its true origin is that it represents the first three letters of the name "Jesus" when written in Greek. This is a very subtle reference to the book's contents, masterfully woven into a design that otherwise impresses with its splendor in a secular genre.

With the help of the different colors we used with this design, we aimed to reveal even more of its splendor. For this Astra cover and its celestial theme, we chose a deep blue tone. In this shade, you will find the luxurious feel of velvet and suede and the magnificence of 18th-century cathedrals adorned with luxurious drapes and rich woods.

  • Paperblanks is a Canadian manufacturer that produces quality notebooks that are not only attractive but also extremely well-structured, bound using traditional techniques; the bindings are not glued (a binding technique that is economical for the manufacturer but eventually leads to page loss) but are instead all sewn.

All Paperblanks notebooks are bound using two methods. They are either hand-sewn using 'Coptic' binding, which has its origins in 4th-century Egypt, or sewn using Smythe, the most durable binding technique, which allows the notebook to open flat without page loss.

All Paperblanks notebooks use acid-free, archival-quality, high-opacity, fine-laid writing paper. Their notebooks also feature a ribbon page marker and an inner pocket inside the back cover to store your notes.
