  • Capturing the atmosphere of Renaissance-style leather-bound books, this Inkblot design pays homage to the delicate art of gold tooling. We added a richly saturated dark blue background to add a bit of edge to the look of finely worked leather.

When we first started making Paperblanks journals, we found a fragment of William Shakespeare's handwriting and knew it would make an inspiring journal cover. Soon, we added designs featuring the writings of Ernest Hemingway and Jane Austen, creating a series that would become our Embellished Manuscripts Collection. These initial covers were minimalist designs featuring literary manuscripts written in black ink on beige paper. Eventually, our creative impulses took over and we tried playing with the design by adding a gold frame.

Starting from a photograph of a small, magnificent piece of gold ornamentation, our Art Director created a full frame for the Shakespeare manuscript and highlighted it with a burnt orange background. Of course, our curiosity about what could happen next didn't end there! When we removed the manuscript, we immediately saw the possibilities for a design inspired by classic Renaissance leather bindings. And thus, our core Old Leather Collection was born.

Today, we are free to play with frame shapes and background colors, and that initial beige and black design continues to form the backbone of two of our most enduringly popular collections.

  • Paperblanks is a Canadian manufacturer that produces quality notebooks that are not only attractive but also extremely well-structured and bound using traditional techniques; the bindings are not glued (a binding technique that is economical for the manufacturer but eventually leads to page loss) but are instead all stitched.

All Paperblanks notebooks are bound using two methods. They are either hand-stitched using 'Coptic' binding, which originated in 4th-century Egypt, or they use Smythe-sewn binding, the most durable binding technique, which allows the notebook to open flat without page loss.

All Paperblanks notebooks use fine, laid writing paper that is acid-free, archival quality, and high opacity. Their notebooks also feature a ribbon bookmark and an inner pocket inside the back cover to store your notes.
