Hafiz's Peacocks Ultra Notebook
  • This magnificent binding comes from the venerable craftsmen at Sangorski & Sutcliffe, the world-renowned British bindery famous for its jewelled covers, including the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam (also known as the Great Omar), which was lost forever during the sinking of the Titanic.

The beautiful binding reproduced here was crafted in 1910 to house a collection of works by the famous Persian poet Hafiz. This work was translated from Persian by Herman Bicknell. It was made of red levant morocco with leather joints and green levant morocco flyleaves. The focal point was three magnificent jewelled peacocks with their feathers fully displayed. The birds were inlaid in eight different colours and embellished with gold leaf inlays. The binding was adorned with pearls and 33 opals, giving it a unique grandeur.

Established in London in 1901, Sangorski & Sutcliffe became one of the most important bookbinding firms of the 20th century, famous for their jewelled bindings such as "Recessional", "Hafiz of Shiraz" and the "Rubaiyat", as well as their use of real gold in cover details.

In an interesting connection to our wider design library, the firm’s founders, Francis Sangorski (1875–1912) and George Sutcliffe (1878–1941), first met in a bookbinding class led by Douglas Cockerell, who is part of the family behind our Cockerell Marbled Paper series! We are honoured to work at this pinnacle of luxury bookbinding and to share the legacy of Sangorski & Sutcliffe with 21st-century book lovers and stationery enthusiasts.

  • Paperblanks is a Canadian manufacturer that produces quality journals that are not only attractive but also extremely well-structured and bound using traditional techniques; the bindings are not glued (a binding technique that is economical for the manufacturer but eventually leads to page loss), but instead are all sewn.

All Paperblanks journals are bound using two methods. They are either hand-sewn using 'Coptic' binding, which dates back to 4th-century Egypt, or Smyth sewn, the most durable binding technique, which allows the journal to open flat without page loss.

All Paperblanks journals use acid-free, archival-quality, and high-opacity fine-laid writing paper. The journals also feature a ribbon page marker and an inner pocket inside the back cover to store your notes.
