This design comes from an 1893 volume housing Voltaire's Zadig, or The Book of Fate. First published in 1747, the book tells the story of Zadig, an ancient Babylonian philosopher. It is a philosophical treatise that provided thematic inspiration for the modern detective story, including Edgar Allan Poe's C. Auguste Dupin.

All Paperblanks notebooks are bound using one of two methods. They are either hand-sewn using 'Coptic' binding, which dates back to 4th-century Egypt, or Smyth sewn, which is the most durable binding technique and allows the notebook to open flat without page loss.
All Paperblanks notebooks use acid-free, archival-quality, high-opacity laid writing paper. Their notebooks also include a ribbon bookmark and an interior pocket inside the back cover to store your notes.

These first covers were minimalist designs featuring literary manuscripts written in black ink on beige paper. Eventually, our creative impulses took over and we tried to play with the design by adding a gold frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eStarting with a photograph of a gorgeous small piece of gold filigree, our Art Director created a full frame for the Shakespeare manuscript and highlighted it with a burnt orange background. Of course, our curiosity about what could happen next didn’t end there! When we removed the manuscript, we immediately saw the possibilities for a design inspired by classic Renaissance leather bindings.
