The archetype of the charming anti-hero is epitomized in Gil Blas, the star of Alain-Rene Lesage's 18th-century picaresque novel. Lesage's work was influenced by the story of Lazarillo de Tormes, a Spanish novella published anonymously in 1554. The cover of a 1846 double edition of these works is reproduced here.

Paperblanks is a Canadian manufacturer that produces quality journals that are not only attractive but also extremely well-structured, bound using traditional techniques; the bindings are not glued (a binding technique that is economical for the manufacturer but eventually leads to page loss), but instead, they are all stitched.
All Paperblanks journals are bound using one of two methods. They are either hand-stitched using 'Coptic' binding, which originated in 4th-century Egypt, or Smyth sewn, which is the most durable binding technique, allowing the journal to lie flat without page loss.
All Paperblanks journals use acid-free, archival-quality, and high-opacity laid paper. Their journals also include a ribbon bookmark and an interior pouch inside the back cover for storing your notes.
