  • In the 15th century, German goldsmith Johannes Gutenberg attempted to mimic the beauty of handmade manuscripts using a mass-production method. In the 1850s, he achieved his goal by casting individual letters in large quantities that could be assembled into printed text; this was a momentous innovation known as the printing press.

With the printing press, Gutenberg created "nova forma scribendi," reproductions of works of great importance that were normally reserved for the clergy and royalty. This led to the printing of his famous 42-line Bible. The Gutenberg Bible was a blend of mass production and artisanal touches; the text was printed in his newly invented movable type, and the colored section headings, initials, and margins were decorated by hand.

Although only 49 copies of Gutenberg's two-volume Latin Bible remain today, it continues to inspire artists and writers. Our Parabole cover design reproduces a hand-illuminated page by German artist Gisela Maschmann. She based the miniature painting of The Judgment of Solomon on a volume from one of Gutenberg's ecclesiastical masterpieces found at the Berlin State Library.

Thanks to Gutenberg's invention in the 1850s, the face of printing changed forever, as it became possible to reproduce the works of scribes who had spent generations meticulously copying text by hand. From the first printing press in Mainz, Germany, the technology spread with extraordinary speed, and by 1470 there were 14 printing presses throughout Europe. The spread of art and culture to people across the continent was critical in moving Europe from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. It is impossible to overstate the importance of Gutenberg's printing press, as it is the fundamental innovation that enabled the spread of literacy worldwide.

  • Paperblanks is a Canadian manufacturer that produces high-quality notebooks that are not only attractive but also extremely well-structured, bound using traditional techniques; the bindings are not glued (a technique that is economical for the manufacturer but eventually leads to page loss) but are instead all sewn.

All Paperblanks notebooks are bound using one of two methods. They are either hand-sewn using 'Coptic' binding, which dates back to 4th-century Egypt, or Smythe sewn, which is the most durable binding technique and allows the notebook to open flat without page loss.

All Paperblanks notebooks use acid-free, archival-quality, high-opacity, finely laid writing paper. The notebooks also include a ribbon page marker and an inner pouch inside the back cover to store your notes.
