Since Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was first published in 1865, it has captivated audiences of all ages. The book’s cast of memorably eccentric characters, Alice’s haphazard adventure and Carroll’s wonderful use of the English language continue to anchor its literary foundation. In memory of the story’s author and in tribute to the magical world he created, we are happy to present our Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland edition.
Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832–1898) is the real name of the man known to most as Lewis Carroll. He is considered one of the leading writers of "nonsense literature," a genre that upends the rules of language and logic. Despite his success as a published author, for most of his life he served as a mathematics lecturer at Oxford University and remained an avid photographer.
The manuscript page used to create this cover design comes from a unique book written and illustrated in Carroll’s own hand. Inspired by three children of his friend Henry Liddell, including a girl named Alice, Carroll created this whimsical story after a summer boat trip with the family. He eventually wrote and presented it to Alice, along with his own drawings as seen here. Being a meticulous man, of course, and not trusting his own ability as an illustrator, he hired professional artist John Tenniel to work closely with him to prepare the book for publication. He also believed that the bright red color for his book's cover was "perhaps not artistically the best, but it was the most attractive to children's eyes." Following a similar logic, we have complemented Carroll's handwriting and drawings with a red background.
In 1928, Alice Liddell, the heroine of Alice's famous adventures, sold the manuscript at auction and the book reached the United States. However, after the Second World War, a group of wealthy American patrons decided to return the book to its homeland as a gesture of gratitude to the British people for their heroism during the war. Now the British Library preserves this precious manuscript, and we are grateful to them for allowing us to create this special title.

Paperblanks is a Canadian manufacturer that produces quality notebooks that are not only attractive but also extremely well-structured, bound using traditional techniques; the bindings are not glued (a binding technique that is economical for the manufacturer but eventually leads to page loss) but are all sewn instead.
All Paperblanks notebooks are bound using two methods. They are either hand-sewn using 'Coptic' binding, which originated in 4th-century Egypt, or Smyth sewn, which is the most durable binding technique and allows the notebook to open flat without page loss.
All Paperblanks notebooks use acid-free, archival-quality, high-opacity, fine-laid writing paper. Their notebooks also feature a ribbon page marker and an inner pocket inside the back cover to store your notes.
